What is Better Learning, Better Communities?
BLBC is a community program run by Great Lakes Neighbourhood Services and developed with input from Elders and the community, delivered by volunteers to help primary age Aboriginal students do the best they can at school. Once a week each child works one-on-one with a volunteer tutor to concentrate on the areas most needed and/or of most interest to that student.
Our aim is to make learning fun and keep students engaged so they want to come back. All our tutors have Working with Children Checks and are carefully trained in how to support Aboriginal kids in their learning. We learn, eat and play games together!
To support Better Learning, Great Lakes Neighbourhood Services also run a Cultural Experience program which includes cruises on Wallis Lake where several Elders talk about local history, important sites and their own stories of growing up in this area.
